Then and Now: King Street, Manchester in 1892.
by carl palmer  DICKENSIAN CHARM: King St in 1892The city centre location has always pulsated to a commercial beat and has, for more than a century, kept a special lustre rivalling addresses like London's Mayfair, and New York's Fifth Avenue. Here, the older image of King Street, in 1892, has a graceful, almost Dickensian charm, with buildings to reflect the bourgeoning affluence of the times. The impressive three and four-storey buildings on both sides of the road are still in place, to help maintain King Street's showpiece façade. In the distance, looking beyond Cross Street, lies a crowded banking and financial quarter, with its own interesting history. The archive photograph is part of a collection chronicling the changing face of Manchester during the past 250 years on a computer at Manchester Central Library.
