Classic corner of history
Chris Osuh DEMOLISHED: Cathedral Hotel, standing next to Chethams THIS quiet corner is one of the most historic places in Manchester. These photos - one from 1900, and a recent one - show Long Millgate and Fennel Street from Corporation Street. The older photo shows the since-demolished Cathedral Hotel, and, to the right of it, Chetham's School. ALL NEW: Modern building now stands in place of Cathedral Hotel The recent picture shows the world-famous music college as it now is.The Cathedral Hotel has been replaced by a modern building and the cobbles are long gone. Despite the drastic modernisation of the area, it remains rich in history. This part of the city, shown in both pictures at a quiet time, was once the medieval heart of the city and home to the Lord of the Manor of Manchester. And it was at Chetham's library, the oldest free public library in Britain, that political thinkers Karl Marx and Frederick Engels met, wrote and researched the world-changing Das Kapital.
