Then and Now: St James's Church

St James's church
St James's church
THE 18th century church pictured here used to stand proudly in the very heart of the city.

St James’s Church in George Street was built by the Rev Cornelius Dayley back in 1788. During the same year, the Independent Chapel in nearby Mosley Street was opened.

The church was  closed in 1928 and demolished two years later. A garage and a club were built on the site and today the location is dotted with offices.

The graves were moved to Southern Cemetery.

Around the time of the demolition, industrialists were saying their own prayers – due to the depression caused by the heavy importations of Indian cotton goods. It was believed that the cotton trade of Great Britain employed 150,000 men and 90,000 women.

Close by, the Portico Library, built in 1802, is probably the best example of the grand architecture to be found in the area.

On the side of Charlotte Street, a rank of columns and ground-floor windows remain and the library continues to be in use.

The black and white photograph is part of a collection chronicling the changing face of Manchester during the last 250 years.

There are more than 77,000 images stored in the Manchester archives on an easy-to-use computer at the city’s Central Library.
