Then and Now: An urban oasis
How Piccadilly Gardens looks today WORK designed to usher the heart of Manchester's Piccadilly into the 21st century has arguably been a mix of success and failure as the city strives to build an open space of international quality. But there have been tangible gains as city bosses determine to improve the urban environment, particularly the overhaul of Piccadilly Gardens. While the showpiece city-centre garden is undergoing a transformation, the newer image shown here indicates that the promise to make the area better for shoppers, visitors, pedestrians and residents is mostly being adhered to. Parker Street in 1932 Buses are still seen zipping through at regular intervals, but the addition of the Metrolink trams is helping return Piccadilly Gardens to its former glory and secure its reputation as a vital hub of the city. The image taken in 1932 has several poignant memory jerkers, including bowler-hatted gentlemen. At the time the area boasted a famous Lyons cafe, an early Persil washing powder sign and lumbering double-decker buses that would dwarf today's sleeker transport. Meanwhile, the £10m new-look Piccadilly Gardens, now reduced in size and the once sunken garden now levelled, has a route called the catwalk, to parade itself to the world.
There are more than 77,000 images stored in the Manchester archives on an easy-to-use computer at the city’s Central Library.
