Then and Now: St Mary's Church, Hulme

WHEN all around was changing, St Mary's Church in Hulme survived to witness what was arguably the most ambitious exercise in community architecture ever seen in Britain.

In fact, from the tallest church spire in Manchester, it would have been easy to survey showpiece new housing replacing the much-derided deck-access flats that once dominated the district.

Today, the quality of urban design is more lively, a mixture of living space, shops and cafes - in contrast to the demolished high-density homes of the 1970s.

A walk further along Chichester Road, seen in the pictures, would take you past imaginative, individual structures, with courtyards, curved roofs and the use of cream brick to add to the overall brightness of an increasingly-popular suburb. The mid-Victorian listed church is not the only building that remained to become part of a bright new future for the Hulme area.

Nearby is Loreto sixth form college - formerly Loreto Convent, started by an order of nuns in 1851 - which caters for young people of different faiths.

The older image in our Then and Now series is part of a collection of pictures chronicling changes in Manchester over 250 years.

There are 77,000 images stored at Central Library. The pictures include street scenes and portraits of individuals and groups, as well as events.
