Then and Now: Rochdale Road

THESE contrasting images of north Manchester are worlds apart in time and appearance - but the older picture tells its own intriguing story of life during the Great Depression.

The year is 1934, and Rochdale Road, pictured at its junction with Queens Road, shows some signs of recovery after the 1929 stock market crash. This led to the worst economic downturn in American history, subsequently spreading to other parts of the world.

The Depression did much to slow down Manchester's exuberant population growth, but a close look at fashions worn by the men and women indicate a degree of returning prosperity.

The ladies, dressed in suit coats, and the bowler-hatted men at least give the impression of economic well-being. Austere but stylish, the mood instilled by the Depression was suitably reflected in the preference for dark colours, navy blue, brown and black.

Today, this area of Manchester couldn't look more different - or brighter. New homes - nearly 3,000, mostly private - are concentrated in the Queens Road-Rochdale Road area.

THE images from our Then and Now series are part of a collection chronicling the changing face of Manchester over 250 years. There are 77,000 images stored on an easy-to-use computer system at Central Library.
