Then and Now: Gortoncross Street Gortoncross Street todayIn 1964, Gortoncross Street and the adjacent Wellington Street were bustling centres of community life. People came from all over Manchester to stock up on groceries, check out the latest fashions and sample the tastiest sweets. Shops of every kind lined the streets. But in the early 1980s most of Gortoncross Street was demolished when the east of Manchester was re-developed. Many of the houses and shops were knocked down and the roads were widened.  The same view in 1964THE archive picture is part of a collection chronicling the changing face of Manchester during the last 250 years. The collection comprises of more than 77,000 images stored on an easy to use computer at Manchester's Central Library.
