Then and Now: Booth Street
TIME has changed the appearance of this corner of Booth Street - but the Crown Hotel name continues to reign in the heart of Manchester city centre. The older image of the hotel, taken in 1962, will probably bring memories flooding back for anyone who worked in the city's rapidly-growing corporate and banking district off Spring Gardens. It may look very different, but a walk around the immediate area is a must for those with an appreciation of the city's architectural mix and heritage. Cubicles Ignoring the modern columns below a towering office block, pictured in the updated image, the buildings visible in the background are more in keeping with the style of this commercial quarter of the city. Looking like a mini-Manhattan, closer inspection of some of the buildings reveals everything from rusticated stone and red brick, to arcade openings and marble-lined walls. In fact, the real crowning glory of many of the buildings can't actually be appreciated from the outside. A look inside one of the banks, since converted to a pub, reveals that some of the original furnishings have been retained, such as customer writing cubicles and polished granite columns. Nearby, other imposing bank and insurance buildings all happily conspire to help signal the city's financial prowess and convey the successful commercial magnet it is today. The archive picture is part of a collection chronicling the changing face of Manchester during the last 250 years. The collection comprises of more than 77,000 images stored on an easy-to-use computer at Manchester's Central Library.
