Then and Now: Ardwick Green South

AT the turn of the last century, Ardwick Green was a hive of business activity as textile merchants marketed their wares from the heart of the once-leafy suburb.

More than a century on, the location just a stone's throw from Manchester city centre has changed dramatically over the years, with vast cleared areas and only a sprinkling of terrace houses surviving the transformation.

The archive picture taken in 1905 clearly conveys the mixture of housing and industry that would have helped sustain the community, bringing a discernible level of prosperity to the district.

In fact, there was a time when Ardwick Green was seen as the perfect setting for small companies who wanted to be reasonably close to the city centre without being compromised by the pitfalls that a busy city town can bring.

With many of the buildings modernised for a blend of office use and living accommodation, the one that stands out is the old George and Dragon pub. Looking a little forlorn surrounded by wide open spaces, the pub has been refurbished to provide new apartments.

Out of shot but close by is the war memorial, erected to commemorate the fallen of the 8th (Ardwick) Battalion in the First World War.

The archive picture is part of a collection chronicling the changing face of Manchester during the past 250 years.

The collection comprises more than 77,000 images stored on an easy-to-use computer at Manchester's Central Library.
