Then and Now:The Lake Hotel

How the corner looks now
How the corner looks now
IN its day, Belle Vue was one of the premier tourist attractions in the north west - but who would have believed that this residential area of east Manchester once boasted a picturesque boating lake?

The landmark Lake Hotel, on Hyde Road, Gorton, was named after it, and was opened in 1876 to take advantage of the nearby Belle Vue railway station.

A popular venue through the years for the thousands of visitors to the giant Belle Vue zoo and park complex, the hotel remained open long after the latter was closed in 1977.

The archive picture shows the Lake Hotel in 1971. The building was eventually demolished to make way for new housing, with its architectural secrets thoughtfully mounted on oilskin at Manchester's Chetham's Library.

Today, most of the old amusement park location near where the hotel once stood has been replaced by housing, plus a £6m multi-screen cinema.

The archive picture is part of a collection chronicling Manchester's changing face during the last 250 years. The collection comprises more than 77,000 images stored on an easy-to-use computer at Manchester's Central Library.
