Then and Now: Wilmslow Road, Didsbury
Martin Dillon  1939: Wilmslow Road, DidsburyDidsbury, in the south of the city, is an area popular with young professionals and celebrities. And the latest image in our Then and Now series shows Wilmslow Road, which runs through the heart of the suburb. The old photograph depicts people going about their daily lives in 1939 with the train station is in the background.  TODAY: The tram will soon be serving this areaA Boots chemist can be seen on the right of the old picture and its modern counterpart is on the same site today. The Dog and Partridge, pictured on the right, is one of the pubs in the road that has been serving thirsty customers for more than 100 years. The photograph is one of more than 77,000 images stored in the Manchester archives on an easy-to-use computer at the city's Central Library.
