Then and Now: Swan Street

THEN: Swan Street in 1900
THEN: Swan Street in 1900
IN 1900 the bustling Swan Street area of Manchester had all the hallmarks of a typical Victorian market - with men in flat caps and ladies in long dresses filling the cobbled streets.

Fittingly, the city's then rapid development and bourgeoning reputation for commerce was soon to see the first electric tram run just a year later.

Swan Street was renowned for a fascinating mix of businesses, including a herring and egg merchant, glass works, oyster dealers, tobacconist, jewellers, pawnbrokers, and instrument makers.

NOW: Some structures remain
NOW: Some structures remain
The archive picture of Swan Street looking towards Rochdale Road is as full of atmosphere and endeavour as optimism for the growth of the city's increasing financial prowess.

While Swan Street is unrecognisable today, with a wide three-lane road, and painted white buildings in place of red brick, a glance upwards shows that some of the structures retain the bold architecture of its glorious past.

The archive picture is part of a large collection at Manchester Central Library chronicling the changing face of Manchester during the past 250 years.
