Then and Now: Ardwick Green

The site of the school now
The site of the school now
THE bricks and mortar may have gone forever - but the spirit of St Gregory's RC High School in Ardwick Green lives on.

Every year, The Old Gregorians' Association holds a reunion for former pupils and staff to reminisce about their days at the old school.

St Gregory's was opened on September 10, 1923, in the former house of Manchester merchant John Rylands when 220 boys entered its doors for the first time.

A considerable extension was added in 1961. This, together with the old buildings, has since been demolished and the site is now a modern housing complex.

Over the years, St Gregory's achieved a very proud academic and sporting record. Pupils gained entry to many top universities and colleges.

The school's war-damaged gym had once fostered the athletic prowess of such luminaries as Billy Walsh, the Manchester City star of the thirties, and Johnny Cusick, British and British Empire lightweight boxing champion.

In 1977, under secondary school reorganisation, the school was moved to Openshaw. The school buildings and the former Rylands house (a listed building) were demolished in the Eighties.

Although St Gregory's no longer exists, once a year, in November, past pupils and staff loyally gather together to remember deceased Gregorians at a requiem mass and social evening.

The archive photograph is part of a large collection chronicling the changing face of Manchester during the past 250 years.

The collection comprises more than 77,000 images on a computer at Manchester Central Library.
