Then and Now: Crumpsall

Crumpsall Lane in 1926
Crumpsall Lane in 1926
IT may not quite be the leafy retreat it once was, but Crumpsall, in north Manchester, is a fascinating mix of history and heritage.

Composer Frederick Chopin once lived in the area, and it still proudly retains its Victorian credentials in the 21st century.

Although Crumpsall Lane in 1926, pictured above, showing a winding tree-lined cobbled road with large houses on either side, has been replaced by modern semi-detached houses, many other buildings have simply changed with the times.

No reference to the area would be complete without mentioning Abraham Moss, a former Lord Mayor, and one of the city's leading Jewish, civic, educational, and cultural figures.

He was chairman of the North Manchester Hospital Management Committee, whose remit included the Jewish Hospital.
