Then and Now: Anson Road, Fallowfield

THEN: Anson Road
THEN: Anson Road
WITH no fewer than seven cars visible idly blocking the pavement, it seems finding a free parking space round Manchester was as much a problem in 1963 as it is today.

A Hillman Minx, Triumph Herald and Morris Traveller - all very popular cars in their day - are among the stationary vehicles pictured here in the older image.

It all demonstrates just how much the car had become an intimate part of life for everyone in the so-called Swinging Sixties.

NOW: Anson Road
NOW: Anson Road
This is a real Then and Now memory jerker for fans of the London pop outfit around at the time of the emerging Beatles and Rolling Stones.

Today, the busy location - at Anson Road, close to the Dickenson Road junction, in Fallowfield - shows little sign of change to the surroundings and architecture, despite a gap of more than 40 years between the two pictures.

Where the renowned roller rink and Hanson greengrocers once stood is now the hub of shopping for people living at nearby Longsight, Rusholme and Birchfields Park.

The parade of shops includes Venus Foods, an exotic food centre that not only benefits from its position at the heart of a vibrant residential area, but also attracts plenty of customers from its spot just two miles south of Manchester city centre.
