Then and Now: Kirkmanshulme Lane, Longsight

THEN: Kirkmanshulme Lane in 1915
THEN: Kirkmanshulme Lane in 1915
FROM its languid elegance in 1915, to the modern go-ahead look it has today, the appearance of Kirkmanshulme Lane in Manchester's Longsight district has managed to remain surprisingly constant for more than a century.

But it is still hard to believe that back in the 19th century, this area of Longsight was once filled by farmland and tiny hamlets.

The romantic, and unlikely story behind the name Longsight, is that Bonnie Prince Charlie stood outside the Wagon and Horses looking towards the city and declared it to be "a long sight".

Kirkmanshulme Lane lined on both sides here with terraced houses, and bisected by Longsight railway station, can't be discussed without some reference to Belle Vue, the speedway venue with the proud distinction of being the only UK race track to stay open through the war years.

In fact, not even bombing and subsequent damage from the Luftwaffe could force them off the track.

Manchester's very first Speedway meeting was held at Kirkmanshulme Lane on 28th July, 1928. The event involved the top five Australian riders of the time against five leading British riders.

The archive photograph is part of a collection chronicling the changing face of Manchester during the past 250 years on a computer at Manchester Central Library.
