Then and Now: Shudehill
Carl Palmer THEN: Shudehill in 1907 MANCHESTER'S historic Shudehill area has been transformed over the last century, but gladly signs of its glorious Victorian past can still be found. In fact, some might argue that the ghosts of Shudehill have survived despite the district being blitzed of its quaint thoroughfares and robbed Fagin-style of its character by the march of redevelopment and modernisation. The city's market places, as numerous as they were interesting, offered a day-by-day mix of goods. At Shudehill, Smithfield Market, the most important in the city at that time, grew up in the late 18th century and expanded widely. NOW: The area has been developed Close inspection of the architecture on the south-east side of Shudehill reveals a few traces of the distinctive medieval red brick and stone dressings - in stark contrast to today's neighbouring high-rise blocks and featureless modern shops and offices. The building on the corner of Hanover Street in 1907, pictured, is a typical example of how parts of Shudehill and its environs not only survived but retain even in the 21st century a reassuring sense of quality and permanence. The archive photograph is part of a collection chronicling the changing face of Manchester during the past 250 years on a computer at Central Library.
Do you have any memories of Shudehill?
