Caribbean comes to Moss Side

Clarissa Satchell

STEEL bands and floats filled the streets of Moss Side for this year's Manchester Caribbean Carnival.

The popular festival, formerly the Moss Side Carnival, was extended over two days for the first time this year, after the event was re-launched as bigger and better last year. The theme of the carnival, which was based at Alexandra Park in Moss Side, was Diversity and Harmony.

Arts and crafts

A range of stalls offered black cultural arts and crafts, jewellery, fashion, and Caribbean cakes and sweets and there were also free Caribbean youth dance workshops in the park on Sunday.

Throngs of dancers dressed in flamboyant costumes and colourful floats carrying carnival queens, bands and DJs also took part in a carnival procession through Moss Side on Saturday.

Performers including international reggae stars J C Lodge and Peter Hunningale appeared at a party in the park after the procession. Manchester city council spokesman Coun Roy Walters said: "Manchester is proud of its cultural diversity and the Caribbean Carnival is a wonderful example of a fun community event."

Moss side carnival, as a hardened fan of the carnival, I have been going for 8years, and I see the difference. How it has changed, no longer do you see rival drugs gangs, using the carnival as a place to settle old scores. Well done to the council for their dedication to the cause!
