Brave Gail baldly steps out

9/ 9/2005

TROUBLED TV presenter Gail Porter today told how her stressful life had led to her hair falling out.

The 34-year-old appeared at a London fashion show last night with the remnants of her hair cut into a red, punk-style mohican.

And the presenter who regularly appeared in lads’ mags said that her hair was falling out because of the stress in her life.

She spent most of her twenties battling anorexia and suffered prolonged bouts of post-natal depression after the birth of her daughter, Honey, in 2003.

Collapsed

Last December, her three-year marriage to Dan Hipgrave, former guitarist in rock band Toploader, collapsed.

The woman whose naked image was once projected on to the Houses of Parliament for a publicity stunt put a brave face on her troubles last night, and said she had decided to be upfront about her hair problem.

“I was in Los Angeles about a month ago filming a television show when one morning I woke up and pretty much all of my hair had fallen out in one night. I was terrified and completely shocked.

“I went to a doctor who told me that I was suffering from alopecia. He told me that it is the result of stress and that there is no cure.

“At first, I didn’t want to go outside. What made it worse was that people kept telling me to wear a wig or a hat to cover up my head. But in the end I decided to show everyone that I’m bald, I’m not afraid and this isn’t going to beat me."

Offensive or Inappropriate?

TV presenter or not, Gail has been brave. I have suffered from alopecia on and off all my life - the last bout (which just seems to be clearing) has lasted 7 years! In that time I have worn wigs, coloured my bald bits in and constantly fretted about it. At no point though was I brave enough to shave it all off and go natural. However, I do think the world of media that Gail works in is probably more forgiving of this kind of gesture and she has got lots of attention from it (which, having worked with her, I know she craves!!).
