Mark Owen finds first love

Carolyn Armstrong

TAKE That star Mark Owen put out an appeal for "his first true love" on a local radio station and last night was astonished to find he'd struck gold.

It was a case of friends reunited when the ex-teen heartthrob talked of his lost love in an interview with Sheffield radio station Hallam FM.

He told DJ Matt McKay he had met "Sammy" during a holiday on Kavos, but despite his efforts to find her in her home town Barnsley, the pair never saw each other again.

The Sammy in question - gorgeous Sammy Jaye who today works as a Kylie Minogue tribute artist - was out shopping when the interview was aired.

Romance

Now she has revealed she was the lucky girl who enjoyed a week-long romance on the Greek island with Mark when they were both 19.

When he asked why he should believe her, she said: "I know his holiday song - it was the Waterboys "Whole of the Moon".

Mother-of-two Sammy, 34, told how she met Mark when he walked into a bar where she and her friends were.

She said: "I noticed him walk in with his mates, and thought `he's good looking'. He was a really good dancer too.

"We got talking, but it was my first night and I went home early. We met up again, and spent loads of time together for the rest of the week he was there.

Kisser

"He was a really good kisser, but it didn't go any further. He was a real gentleman.

She added: "He told me he was going to join a band called Take That. I didn't believe him though.

"When he went home I was really sad and missed him a lot. But by the time I went home a week later, he had already sent me a letter.

"We kept in touch by phone, and he wrote me loads of letters and cards for a few months afterwards. They were really soppy, but they were nice.

"He played a really early Take That song down the phone to me called `Girl', which was never released.

"He even came over to Barnsley one day to meet up with me, but I wasn't in.

"He was starting to get more famous by then, so it just petered out.

Pleased

"When he got famous, I was pleased for him. I was never a huge Take That fan, but I think what they did was great.

"I've thought about him a bit since they split up, but I wasn't expecting him to put out an appeal for me on the radio. It would be nice to see him again."

When she rang in to tell DJ Phoneboy she was separated, he said: "So he might still be in with a chance with you then?

"I feel like Cilla Black. If you have a wedding let me know, I'll buy a hat."
