Brave Wendy fights off knife maniac

A COURAGEOUS student has told how she fought off a frenzied mugger who stabbed her 12 times.

Wendy Dong, 19, of Ardwick, was assaulted with what police believe to be a three-inch penknife after she refused to let go of her bag.

The Manchester University biomedical chemistry student suffered 10 stab injuries to her hands and was also knifed in her face and chest as she walked home along London Road.

Wendy, who is recovering in Wythenshawe Hospital, said: "I wasn't scared. I was so determined not to let him have my property and I didn't think he could seriously hurt me.

"I didn't feel any pain, and it wasn't until I saw blood dripping and felt it pouring down my head I thought it might be serious. As I walked towards the Mancunian Way flyover I heard footsteps.

Grabbed

"When I was under the flyover somebody grabbed my bag and I turned around and realised he had a knife. He said `Give me your bag, I've got a knife.'

"I held on to the bag so he started stabbing my hands. When I started to scream he panicked and stabbed me in the head and body before running off. I got the impression he wasn't very experienced."

The knife maniac fled empty-handed and Wendy walked to London Road skate park, where staff called an ambulance. Wendy is being treated at a specialist unit and doctors fear her hands may have suffered nerve damage.

Wendy added: "I'm on the lucky side of unlucky - but it could have been much worse. If you know anything that will help capture this man please come forward. If he thinks he got away with it this time he will grow bolder and hurt someone much more seriously next time."

The knifeman was described as white, skinny, about 5ft 7in and in his early twenties, wearing dark clothing.

It's about gauging risk. If you look at your attacker and know full well you're beat, then back down - not worth dying over. But if you see a nervous kid you think you can get the better of, hell, go for it. If we all just backed down on the first glance people would be taking the clothes off our backs and having us hand over our wallets at every opportunity.

It's refreshing to see people are not ready to back down and will fight back, even for something as simple as a bag - it's the principle of the matter!

Is it really worth keeping hold of your bag to come away like that, I am all for standing up to these sick yobs but at what cost?
