City wins in dash for transport cash

9/ 1/2006

ALMOST half the government cash for transport schemes in the north west has been earmarked for Greater Manchester projects, including Metrolink.

The North West Regional Assembly has announced the 25 major transport projects it believes should go ahead using government cash in the next 10 to 12 years- and highlights projects which should be dumped.

Those getting support include the Metrolink extension, the Alderley Edge by-pass, Stockport relief road, Leigh guided busway, Glossop spur, public transport remodelling in Bolton town centre, and extra yellow school buses.

Dumped

There are four back-up schemes in case there are problems delivering those chosen within the time frame, including the Altrincham Interchange and Wigan Inner Relief road.

Dumped schemes include plans to merge Wigan's two railway stations and bus station to form a "transport hub", the A57 Trafford Park link road, Ashton-in-Makerfield northern by-pass, Droylsden relief road and new bus facilities for Wythenshawe.

Out of the £1.3bn the Dept for Transport has made available to the north west the assembly is recommending that 48 per cent should come to projects in Greater Manchester. It says Merseyside should get 16 per cent, Lancashire and Cheshire 13 per cent each, and Cumbria 10 per cent.

This is the first time the government has asked for transport spending priorities to be decided on a regional level.

Lord Peter Smith of Leigh, chairman of the NWRA executive board, said:

"We had to make tough choices, but we would rather do this ourselves in the region rather than have it done to us by Whitehall."

What do you think of our regional transport priorities? Have your say.

Can anyone explain why the new bus station for Wythenshawe has been dumped?? full of empty promises, i'm getting sick of all these good ideas that never materialise if your not going to do anything to improve Wythenshawe then dont bother saying it and getting peoples hopes up in the first place that just makes it worse.
