Charles Clarke's future in the balance

28/ 4/2006

THE future of Home Secretary Charles Clarke is in the balance after a hunt was launched for the 1,023 foreign prisoners who escaped deportation when freed from jail.

A secret list of the most serious offenders - including murderers and rapists - has been sent to probation chiefs to see if any of them have committed offences since being released.

If any have been involved in serious crime Mr Clarke will almost certainly resign, say experts. Both police and the probation service are thought to be concentrating on about 80 serious offenders.

The first results of their inquiries have already been sent to the Home Office.

Meanwhile, Tony Blair has admitted that so-called "Black Wednesday" was "not a great day" for the government.

The Prime Minister said it had been "tough" for under-fire ministers John Prescott, Charles Clarke and Patricia Hewitt.

SHOULD Charles Clarke resign over this matter? Have your say.
