Tesco woos single travellers with price cut

Peter Sharples
24/ 5/2005

TESCO slashed the cost of all its in-store travel insurance policies by 20 per cent last week. A family of four heading off to a European resort for a fortnight can now get cover from Tesco for '30.39 - over '8 cheaper than its main rival, Sainsbury's - and over '27 cheaper than similar cover offered by the Post Office.

Tesco's price for insurance for a single traveller going to Europe for two weeks is now '15.99. A couple would pay '27.99.

Single parent families usually pay more than they need when taking their children on holiday because they don't fit the conventional two-adults two-kids stereotype.

Christian Young of Go Travel (www.gotravelinsurance.co.uk) says: "We regard it as wholly wrong to charge a single parent family the same premium as a two parent family and single parents who find themselves being asked to do this should immediately question why and shop around."

Go Travel's price for cover for an adult with two children travelling to Europe for 15 days is '14.56 - half the normal family premium of '29.12.

TravelPlan Direct (www.travelplandirectinsurance.com) is offering a 10 per cent no-claims discount for people renewing annual policies, who have not made a claim in the previous 12 months.

An annual policy for a family travelling to Europe costs from '54.81, with worldwide cover available from '103. These prices are before the no-claims discount is applied.
