Summit seeks answers on world of terror

27/ 5/2004

AN INTERNATIONAL conference on terrorism is being held in Greater Manchester this week.

Organisers say the views and opinions of experts from across the world could provide valuable lessons to the intelligence and security services here and abroad.

The event, tomorrow and on Saturday, is entitled "The Role of Intelligence in Combating Terrorism".

It is thought to be the first of its kind in this country since the September 11 terrorist atrocities in America.

The conference has been organised by terrorism expert Prof Eugene de Silva, head of the Faculty of Intelligence, Security and Terrorism Studies at Denmark's Knightsbridge University and an honorary research fellow at the Centre for Defence and International Security Studies at the University of Lancaster.

Intelligence

He is also part of the International Institute for Specialist Education and Research, based in Manchester city centre.

"The world of intelligence was completely transformed at the end of the Cold War," he said. "While this major change broadened the focus of intelligence, in an age of information the intelligence services are now faced with the difficulty of distinguishing the important from the urgent.

"Now the post-9/11 period has highlighted many of the failures in intelligence systems hitherto ignored.

"Participants of the conference will be given an opportunity to share their views with experts of these fields and major issues and solutions will be forwarded to relevant security and intelligence services."

About 50 people are expected to attend the conference at the Sedgley Park Police Training School in Prestwich. Among experts speaking will be Salford University's Dr Gavin Cameron, who will talk about intelligence and weapons of mass destruction.

This was an excellent conference, on an important subject. The Knightsbridge University faculty present really know their stuff. Now, more than ever, we need to understand the nature of terrorism and how to prevent it.
