Homeless project up for award

23/ 6/2004

A PROJECT which provides a groundbreaking service to young homeless people in the North West was today hoping to scoop a prestigious national award.

The Municipal Journal Local Government Achievement Awards ceremony will be held tonight at the exclusive Savoy Hotel in London and Bury Council's Homeless Young People's Advisers Team are in with a chance of bringing home an accolade.

The scheme, which has attracted national interest, is designed to keep families together and tackle youth homelessness.

Last year it was praised by the Government and is now being copied in other parts of the country.

The programme, which has helped more than 200 young people since its launch in April 2002, is run by a small team from the Advice and Assessment Service in Bury Council's Social Services, Health and Housing Department.

Members help provide family mediation to stop teenagers from leaving home and becoming homeless or going into care.

The project has been a great success and has ensured there are no longer any youngsters sleeping rough on Bury's streets.

Emergency

The initiative recently established an emergency night shelter for young people in Bury and helps young, unaccompanied asylum seekers.

Eleni Ioannides, the council's director of Social Services, Health and Housing, said: "We are delighted that this scheme has been shortlisted for an award.

"It is making a real difference to dozens of young lives throughout the borough and whatever the judges' final decision the team deserves everyone's congratulations."
