True cost of stag and hen nights revealed
13/ 8/2004
REVELLERS will spend a "staggering" '532 million this year on hen and stag nights, often travelling abroad for a wild weekend, according to a report published today.
Research for Morgan Stanley Credit Card showed that friends of a bride or groom will spend an average of '365 each celebrating a final fling.
Even a modest evening out will set people back '90, according to a survey of 2,000 people.
More than 3.3 million Britons will attend a hen or stag night this year, with a third in their 20s and one in 10 aged over 50.
Mancunians were most likely to go to Barcelona ('277) while favourite haunts for Londoners included Budapest ('216 for a flight and two nights in a hotel), or Amsterdam ('244).
Expensive
Not surprisingly, food and drink will be the most expensive part of any celebration, with men spending an average of '112, twice as much as women.
Patrick Muir, marketing director of Morgan Stanley's Consumer Banking Group, said: "It seems that the days of saying goodbye to single life over a couple of beers in the local pub may have come to an end.
"The modern day hen and stag experience has evolved into an extravagant, and often costly affair.
"Best men and bridesmaids have a minefield of options available and as our research shows, the ex-Soviet Bloc countries now rival their Western neighbours in terms of cost."
