Dirty Dancing voted favourite film

13/ 9/2004

COMING-OF-AGE movie Dirty Dancing has come top of a poll to find the nation's favourite film.

The tale of sexual awakening was voted ahead of classics like The Godfather and epics like The Lord Of The Rings.

The movie, starring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, and set in an American summer camp, became a hit after its release in 1987.

Now the film, which sees Grey's character Baby fall in love with dance teacher Johnny Castle (Swayze), is to return to cinema screens.

Dirty Dancing will be shown, together with nine other movies, including The Shawshank Redemption, which have made it into the top 10 favourite list.

The Shawshank Redemption, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, came second in the poll, followed by Indiana Jones movie Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

The first movie in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, The Fellowship Of The Ring, came fourth, followed by Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.

Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts, came sixth, followed by The Godfather, romantic flick Love Actually and Bridget Jones's Diary, with Gladiator in 10th place.

The 10 movies will be shown in a "film fest" weekend on September 25 and 26 at participating Vue cinemas.

Around 200,000 people voted by text or email in the nationwide poll for Diet Coke and Vue cinemas between April 1 and May 31, choosing from a selection of around 100 movies.

The top 10 list:

1. Dirty Dancing (1987)

2. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

3. Raiders Of the Lost Ark (1981)

4. The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring (2001)

5. Pulp Fiction (1994)

6. Pretty Woman (1990)

7. The Godfather (1972)

8. Love Actually (2003)

9. Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)

10. Gladiator (2000).

Um, I don't think so! The greatest film ever made is Stand By Me!

Offensive or Inappropriate?

Im not surprised that people that drink diet coke and believe it will make them thin have voted for that load of rubbish. Have they not seen - The Twelve Angry Men, Ben Hur, The Godfather 1 or 2, A Bridge Too Far, the original 1978 version of Dawn of the Dead, Star Wars 4 or 5, Schindlers List, as somebody as already mentioned Stand By Me, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The African Queen, Do The Right Thing, Glory, The Shining, The Changeling, The Wizard of Oz, King Kong, The 39 Steps, The Quiet Man, Rear Window, Jaws (1 only), Alien, Aliens, Terminator 1 or 2 - I could go on for hours, the point I am making is that with all that wealth of entertainment out there they would rather see Patrick Swayze prance about with a schoolgirl than watch anything half way decent and that this isnt really news worthy of a headline, it would be better suited to the centre spread of Look-in.
