Morrissey reunion mystery

Carl Palmer

A SENSATIONAL reunion beckons for Manchester pop icon Morrissey and the Smiths - but who can say if the man himself will be there.

Next month marks the 20th anniversary of the Manchester band's first single, Hand in Glove, which introduced the group credited with raising the consciousness of a generation.

But since then a long-running and acrimonious court battle over royalties has destroyed any remaining goodwill between Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr on one side and bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce on the other.

Enigmatic

Morrissey, the famously enigmatic star who now lives in Los Angeles, has been invited by BBC6, the rock and pop digital radio station, which is trying to set up a reunion party in the band's honour at the Salford Lads' Club where it all began.

Factory Records boss Anthony Wilson is already confirmed as a guest at the reunion party.

There will also be such Manchester luminaries as Peter "Hooky" Hook, from New Order, Clint Boon from Inspiral Carpets, and the pioneering Manchester punk band the Buzzcocks.

The organiser, the veteran radio presenter Liz Kershaw, is basing a three-hour programme around the distinguished gathering.

She said: "I have had loads of people e-mailing me, saying they want to come along.

Touched

"I have contacted everybody who would have rubbed shoulders with them at the time in Manchester, and whose lives would have been touched by them through the music, who would have a tale to tell.

"We are inviting Morrissey and I think he's quite fond of me because he sent me a message saying 'Hello'. We are also inviting Johnny Marr.

"It would be fantastic if one or other of those two were there."

Hi, im matthew 14. I think the courtcase was a tragic end to a band who are in my opinion, more inspirational and far better than the beatles. But the magic of Morrissey's lyrics and beutiful vocals and Marr's magnificiant guitar work worked so well and to top it off they had a great rhythm section to back them up. Ive listened to the smiths for years but since morrissey's you are the quarry came out i picked up a couple of more cds from the smiths. I have also noticed a new band "The ordinary boys" seem to love the smiths and if you listen you can hear the smiths in there. I think the ordinary boys are great and they should play at the reunion if it happens. If it doesnt happen then i think they will all regret it. Morrissey and co. for me and the rest of your fans, please come Thank you, Matthew

Offensive or Inappropriate?

Forget a reunion between the Smiths and Morrissey. I'd love to see Steven Patrick join Herman's Hermits. After all, "Henry VIII, I Am" is a fabulous record.
