Busker Nick is coming in from the cold

5/ 2/2004

BUSKER Nick Bold has stars in his eyes - as he prepares to appear on TV as George Harrison.

Singer-songwriter Nick, from Bury, usually entertains shoppers in St Ann's Square in Manchester with his guitar and harmonica playing.

And it was two impressed passers-by who gave him the idea to apply to perform as the late ex-Beatle on the hit TV show Stars in Their Eyes, hosted by Matthew Kelly.

Nick explained: "One day I was busking at my normal spot when two ladies came up to me and told me I should go on the show as George Harrison.

"People have always told me I look like him so I thought I'd give it a go. I made a CD and sent it off, but I couldn't believe it when I was picked to go on the show, performing My Sweet Lord."

Nick has always been passionate about music and toured America with his band Virginia Wolf during the 1980s when they had a record contract with Atlantic.

He gave up his job as a taxi driver three years ago and became a full-time licensed busker.

As well as his regular spot, he can sometimes be found busking in Chester, Bolton and York. His favourites songs are those by James Taylor, Elton John, Paul Simon and David Gray.

He said: "I love it. Taxi driving wasn't for me as I couldn't handle the constant pressure of the traffic. Music is what I love and I take it quite seriously.

"I've always loved the Beatles and as a guitar player George Harrison was amazing. I really enjoyed being him."

To see Nick perform My Sweet Lord and find out how he got on in the contest, watch Stars in Their Eyes on ITV this Saturday at 6.25pm.
