Elton to 'marry' in Charles' wedding hall

THE PROSPECTIVE HAPPY COUPLE: Sir Elton John and David Furnish
THE PROSPECTIVE HAPPY COUPLE: Sir Elton John and David Furnish
Pop royalty Sir Elton John is set to follow in the footsteps of Charles and Camilla at his civil partnership ceremony in Windsor later this month, it has been announced .

Registrar Clair Williams who performed the royal wedding at Windsor's Guildhall in April is to do the honours again when Sir Elton is formally joined to his long-term partner David Furnish, it was announced today.

Ms Williams, the Superintendent Registrar of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, will conduct the couple's civil partnership ceremony on December 21 in an event set to add a touch of stardust to the Civil Partnership Act which came into force today.

She will be joined by her colleague, experienced registrar Peter Edwards.

Ms Williams said today: "We are delighted that Sir Elton and Mr Furnish have chosen to have their civil partnership ceremony in the Royal Borough and I and my colleague, Peter, will do out utmost to ensure that the ceremony is a very special and private occasion for them and their guests."

Private

While the ceremony is to be a private event, fans are expected to converge on the narrow streets of Windsor hoping to catch a glimpse of the couple and the local council is already liaising with Thames Valley Police in anticipation.

The Prince of Wales chose the elegant 17th century building, part designed by Sir Christopher Wren, for the civil wedding ceremony to the Duchess of Cornwall in April before a religious blessing at St George's Chapel inside Windsor Castle.

Cllr Mary Rose Gliksten, leader of Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council, said: "Sir Elton and Mr Furnish are making a solemn and formal commitment to each other and our Guildhall offers them both dignity and privacy.

"We wish them both much happiness for their important day."

:: The Windsor Guildhall was built between 1687 and 1689. Designed by Sir Thomas Fitch, the project was taken over after his death in 1689 by Sir Christopher Wren, whose father was the Dean of St George's Chapel, Windsor.
