He was best-known for fronting Noel's House Party, a BBC Saturday night programme axed in 1999 after eight years.

The beauty contest will be judged by celebrities including chef Jean Christophe Novelli, Strictly Come Dancing's Brendon Cole and Coronation Street's Shobna Gulatti.

Other judges will be Christine Hamilton and two Celebrity Big Brother veterans, John McCririck and Faria Alam.

Closing stage

They will pick an overall winner from 50 girls who have made it to the closing stage, after winning regional heats and gaining wild card entries.

The stake is the title of Miss Great Britain 2006, a 12-month schedule of modelling work and a part in a Hollywood movie.

Fashion entrepreneur Robert de Keyser, who is organising the contest, said: "Miss Great Britain now represents the only truly nationwide contest to find the most beautiful girl in these islands.

"I am delighted to be associated with its relaunch as a truly modern pageant in which the widest possible range of women can feel comfortable and proud to take part."

The final will be held at Grosvenor House Hotel, London, on Saturday, February 25.
