Potter stars shine at Empire Awards

THE stars of Harry Potter have been honoured for their outstanding contribution to the British film industry.

The movies, which have grossed more than £2 billion worldwide, received a special award at the Sony Ericsson Empire Awards.

Daniel Radcliffe, 16, who plays the schoolboy wizard, was there to accept the Empire Outstanding Contribution Award.

The Empire Awards are the only movie gongs to be voted for by the British public.

Hollywood legend Tony Curtis was the recipient of the Empire Lifetime Achievement Award for a career which has included Some Like It Hot, Spartacus, and The Defiant Ones.

The 80-year-old star flew into London for the ceremony.

And the award was presented by Sir Roger Moore, his co-star in cult TV series The Persuaders.

The pair were reunited 34 years after their on-screen partnership as wealthy playboys Danny Wilde and Lord Brett Sinclair.

Comic Bill Bailey hosted the ceremony from the Hilton London Metropole.

Crash

Thandie Newton was named Best Actress for her role in Oscar-winning race drama Crash.

Johnny Depp was voted Best Actor for his star turn in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Big budget epic King Kong won Best Movie - after it was ignored for the major prizes at the Oscars.

Best British Movie went to Pride & Prejudice, which starred Keira Knightley.

Gromit

Wallace and Gromit : The Curse of the Were-Rabbit also picked up an award - best directors for Nick Park and Steve Box.

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith won two gongs, best sci-fi and best scene for the moment when Anakin Skywalker is re-born as Darth Vader.

Kelly Reilly was named best newcomer for her performances in Mrs Henderson Presents and Pride & Prejudice.

Dirty Pretty Things director Stephen Frears received the Empire Inspiration Award, while the Empire Icon Award went to Scottish actor Brian Cox.
