Rainbow is children's favourite

RAINBOW has been voted the best children's show of all time.

The adventures of Zippy, George and Bungle still hold a special place in the nation's heart 34 years after they first appeared on TV.

The Magic Roundabout was second in the poll, followed by Mr Benn and Playschool in joint third place.

The survey of 1,000 adults was commissioned by the BBC to launch its new CBeebies Weekly magazine for pre-schoolers.

Trumpton

Bagpuss was fifth, with The Wombles and The Clangers tied for sixth place, just ahead of Trumpton.

Button Moon and Camberwick Green also made the top 10.

Other classic shows in the top 20 include Jackanory, Paddington Bear, The Sooty Show and The Flumps.

Clinical psychologist Dr Tanya Byron, of BBC shows Little Angels and The House of Tiny Tearaways, said: "Children now are raised on a staple of Teletubbies, Tweenies and Bob the Builder. but the survey shows that the nation still has fond memories of these older programmes."
