Lancs in real danger
4/ 9/2004
Lancashire were left in even greater relegation danger after a 147-run loss to Surrey set up by their rookie spinner Nayan Doshi.
The 24-year-old, whose father Dilip played Test cricket for India, took six for 57 as Lancashire, needing 277 to win, were all out for 129.
That beat the previous career best of five for 125 Doshi had set in the first innings to give him match figures of 11 for 182, less than three months after he was playing league cricket for Ealing - and against a county who gave him one second team appearance last year.
Former England seamer James Ormond switched to off-spin and weighed in with four for 22 as 20 wickets fell in the day, all to spin.
Lancashire's slow left-armer Gary Keedy had also capitalised on the turning Old Trafford pitch to take a season's best figures of six for 95 as Surrey struggled to 185 all out in their second innings, with the other four wickets falling to Carl Hooper.
Top scorer
Azhar Mahmood top-scored with an unbeaten 58 including two sixes off Keedy, after being dropped on 18 by Dominic Cork at square leg, and Sajid Mahmood at deep mid-wicket 11 runs later.
There seemed a danger of those missed chances proving expensive as they allowed Surrey to recover from 115 for seven, with Tim Murtagh supporting Azhar in an eighth-wicket stand of 47.
But in the end it was academic, as Lancashire never even threatened to come close.
Doshi had Iain Sutcliffe caught behind and in his next over bowled Mal Loye with a ball which shot along the ground.
Mark Chilton chipped a catch to mid-off, again off Doshi, who also sent back both of Lancashire's overseas players Stuart Law and Carl Hooper for the second time in the match - Law lbw for 24, and Hooper caught at slip for 10.
At that stage, he was on course to take all 10 wickets in the innings, before Ormond grabbed the next three.
Ormond also wrapped up the win by having Keedy caught off the glove by Jon Batty, giving Surrey's wicketkeeper captain 10 dismissals in the match.
