Macclesfield 3 Carlisle 0

29/ 1/2006

BRIAN Horton celebrated his 100th game in charge of Macclesfield with a convincing victory over high-flying Carlisle.

"It was an excellent performance," said a delighted Horton. "There was a good crowd and a good atmosphere and the players seemed to thrive on that like they did when we beat Stockport.

"If we carry on playing like that we won't have any problems this season.

"We told the players to treat this game like a cup tie and they did and they got their reward."

The Silkmen were quick out of the blocks and were two up after just nine minutes.

Impressive

Danny Swailes started off the goal flurry with his first goal for the club with a downward header from Kevin Sandwith's corner in just the fifth minute.

Four minutes later Macc were two up, Kevin McIntyre scooping the impressive Danny Whitaker's square ball into the corner of the net.

Paul Harsley had to head a Kevin Gray effort off the line, but otherwise Carlisle, who play Macc twice again in the coming weeks in the northern final of the LDV Vans Trophy, offered little.

Whitaker added a third in the 42nd minute with a slightly mis-hit shot that bobbled in from Harsley's cross.

Home keeper Alan Fettis earned his clean sheet with a good block from Derek Holmes' close-range shot in the 85th minute after the ball had gone under Dave Morley's foot.

Great result from Macc and on the surface it was a great attendance.

But with 2,100 Carlisle fans, a couple of hundred fans of other clubs it leaves about 1,700 supporters from Macclesfield.

People of Macclesfield, that is NOT GOOD ENOUGH. If you want a Football League side in your town this was the chance to proove it. And you proved that you simply don't care.
