Blues set to miss out on Van Buyten

25/ 5/2004

Manchester City manager Kevin Keegan is on the brink of missing out on his number one summer transfer target.

Keegan has claimed that if he could sign any player in the world this summer it would be Daniel van Buyten, who impressed during six games in City colours until his loan move from Marseille was ended prematurely when he picked up a knee injury.

However, the cash-strapped Blues boss knew his chances of signing the '3million-rated Belgian international on a permanent basis would be severely hampered by his lack of transfer funds and, as he feared, van Buyten is now set to move elsewhere.

FC Hamburg coach Klaus Toppmoller has confirmed talks with van Buyten are at an advanced stage and representatives from the Bundesliga outfit are due to talk with their Marseille counterparts tomorrow to finalise the deal.

Top star

"Daniel is an absolute top star and he speaks German," Toppmoller told www.skysports.com

"I could imagine that he could become our new captain."

The loss of van Buyten will be a blow to Keegan, especially as the player himself had recently expressed a desire to join City if at all possible.

As to being grown up,one day when I grow up I want to be like you,sat in front of the telly, can of beer in one hand and crisps in the other wondering why lah lah is so bloody good looking nowadays.

Offensive or Inappropriate?

Having travelled to Portsmouth in January and witnessed the most inept display of defending I had ever since from a professional football team (Remember a 37 year old Sheringham who had not scored in the previous 3 months running 7/8 yards before meeting a free kick unchallenged in the penalty box) two things were obvious - the GK and centre halves currently at the club at that time were simply not up to the required standard - the team were unable to win games simply because there was just not enough defensive ability in key positions to prevent the opposition from scoring. The signing of James and DVB undoubtedly saved the side from relegation. Surely Mr Wardle and the board as football fans if nothing else must see that signing a quality defender is a must otherwise another relgation battle will surely follow and this time will surely end up with Coca Cola league football. Distin has gone - he has not played a decent game since Steve Howey left and his form improved beyond recognition when DVB was here. Sommeil is a liability and must be shipped out now. Mr Chairman as a football man surely you must be able to see it would be madness not to put the defensive problem right NOW.
