Rumour mill: Transfer countdown

30/ 8/2005

MANCHESTER City will work right up until the deadline closes to bring players into the club despite a succession of frustrating knock-backs.

The Blues thought they had done enough to lure Steed Malbranque to the club with a £5million bid only to see that turned down, and later Stelios Giannakopoulos signed a new deal with Bolton rather than come to City.

However, boss Stuart Pearce is still working overtime in order to add to his high-flying squad.

He has still not completely given up on Malbranque, and he may consider bringing Chelsea midfielder Geremi to the club on a year's loan.

Other rumours doing the rounds include a late offer for Didi Hamann from Liverpool, and even an audacious bid for Italy international Alessandro Del Piero from Juventus.

Who should City go for? Have your say.

I am happy that SP has not wasted money, but we really could have done with a couple of low cost loans, just to keep thing tidy until January and also to demonstrate some ambition which could have the desired effect and put some bums back on seats at COMS, which is exactlt what our immediate competitors have done.

Offensive or Inappropriate?

No-one is suggesting that we rush out and spend every penny like Keegan did, but the fact is, despite there being a number of glaring weaknesses in the team, we have had all summer to identify possible transfer targets (something which Charlton, Birmingham, Newcastle, Blackburn, Spurs and several others have all managed to do quite satisfactorily), but have managed to spend just 1.5 million. How serious are we about Europe? And for the record I have absolute faith in Stuart Pearce, and have never said otherwise. It's the motives of the Board I don't trust!
