City v Sunderland: Player ratings

5/ 3/2006

James - Fairly quiet afternoon, but kept his cool under some second-half pressure 6

Jordan - Another solid performance and made one timely intervention to prevent an equaliser 7

Dunne - Largely untroubled by the Sunderland attack 6

Distin - His pace snuffed out most of the Black Cats' threat 7

Richards - Had a good shout for a penalty turned down and tackled well 7

Reyna - A bit careless in possession at first but played his part in the second goal 6

Musampa - Put in a few good tackles but could have used the ball better 6

Riera - Started brightly and fizzed one shot over, but faded and was taken off 6

Sinclair - Along with Samaras, City's main threat and set up the Greek for his second goal 7

Vassell - His hernia problem didn't seem to affect his pace, but he took too long when presented with his chances and most of his shots were blocked 6

Samaras - Took his goals excellently, and although he was partly at fault for Sunderland's goal, he was the pick of the Blues players 8

Subs

Sun - Didn't make much impact 5

Wright-Phillips - Added a bit of urgency but didn't have much time 6

Ireland - Into his crisp passing game immediately, but only had 10 minutes 6

Just come in to work today and haven't read any of the other comments but have a few of my own. Samaras, great two finishes, but second half, no movement, hugged the right touchline for what seemed like twenty minutes, gave the ball away too easily, no way an 8. Pearce, what was the point of switching Sun for Riera. Sun looked like he's not kicked a ball all season, never mind whilst out injured. No point and a wasted substitution. Whilst I'm at it, why not give Brad a full half and I think you replaced the wrong forward. On a plus, it was great to see Micah come straight back in having recovered. Left on Sunday very frustrated, 2-0 up after ten minutes against bottom of the league, and end up hanging on. Massive opportunity lost.

Offensive or Inappropriate?

I can't understand some of the comments on here today. Kiki better than Riera wide left? Don't make me laugh. Apparently we were abysmal against Sunderland. Well thats not the way I saw it. A blistering start, two quality goals (left foot and right foot) from the new kid, and three points. Ok so we gave a soft goal away, and took things too easy after that, although bear in mind that Reyna wasn't match fit, and Sunderland were not prepared to roll over and die. But we still created chances and easily did enough to win the game. To lose 2-1 would be abysmal, but it wasn't was it. Stop behaving like a bunch of spoilt rags. Just because it was only Sunderland does not mean anything less than 4-0 is not good enough. We are now three points off a Euro place so can we just get behind em instead of getting all hormonal just because we didn't win by as much as we wanted to?
