Richardson gets England call

18/ 5/2005

MANCHESTER United starlet Kieran Richardson believes his call-up to the England squad for the forthcoming tour of the USA is all down to his successful loan spell with West Brom.

Midfielder Richardson and Fulham defender Zat Knight were on Tuesday handed surprise selections to tour the USA later this month.

The pair were both drafted into the squad by Sven-Goran Eriksson after Shaun Wright-Phillips and Matthew Upson withdrew with injuries.

Richardson, 20, told West Brom's website: "It's a great honour to play for your country and it just shows how well I have been playing recently.

"If it was not for West Brom I would not be in the position I am in right now. Playing regularly has given me the chance to show people what I can do and I have grown in confidence."

Eriksson told www.thefa.com: "I have seen Kieran play on a number of occasions this season and there is no doubt he is a tremendous young talent.

"He has taken his chance with West Brom in the second half of the season and has played a significant role in keeping the club up. He has impressed me and I look forward to having him with us.

"I hope he can make the most of this opportunity with England just as he has done with West Brom."

Is it time Fergie called Richardson back into the United fold? Have your say.

First and foremost I am a West Brom supporter and cannot thank Alex Ferguson for allowing Keiran Richardson to be on loan to us for the season just past.

I am also glad to see Keiran has been called up into the England side, he deserves.

From a selfish point of view I would like to see Keiran back at The Hawthorns next season but I suppose we will have to wait to see what MUFC want to do next season with him. I suppose with Ryan Giggs signing a two year extension to his contract could keep Keiran out of the side but I suppose we will have to wait and see.

Anyway, best of luck at the weekend in Cardiff and I sincerely hope you stuff Arsernal.
