Tranmere Rovers 2 Oldham Athletic 0

BRIAN Talbot was frustrated after Latics matched Tranmere but were undone by two moments of magic from Canadian striker Iain Hume at Prenton Park.

Already missing Mark Bonner, Latics received another early blow when Les Pogliacomi sustained a groin injury and was replaced by Craig Mawson.

Talbot said: "I am disappointed because I thought we edged the first half and neither of our goalkeepers had a save to make, yet we lost 2-0."

Ex-Halifax stopper Mawson remained untroubled in an uneventful opening period as Tranmere produced neat pockets of possession but lacked punch up-front.

And Latics were a whisker away from taking the lead seconds before the break as they sprung quickly from defence, Danny Boshell's pass sending Jermaine Johnson racing through down the right and his fierce drive flew across keeper John Achterberg before bending inches wide.

A last-ditch Mark Arber clearance denied substitute Eugene Dadi just after the restart when Hume's inswinging cross caused havoc.

And six minutes later, Achterberg did well to parry Johnson's fierce low shot from Kevin Betsy's pass.

But Rovers finally broke the deadlock on 65 minutes as dangerman Hume whipped in a fine ball and Dadi nodded home unchallenged at the far post.

Eight minutes later, they confirmed victory as Hume switched flanks to link up with Gareth Roberts before curling a splendid 20-yard shot over Mawson.

Rodney Jack replaced the anonymous Chris Killen late on, but the hosts went closest again when ex-Latic David Beresford blazed wastefully over.
