Lacrosse: Give us a break, plead strugglers

ROCHDALE chairman Allan Collingwood believes his side need a Christmas break to recharge their batteries.

The Bridgefold Road club, rooted at the foot of the Premier Division, did their cause no good when they were thumped 23-2 by 2001 league champions Mellor at the weekend.

"We didn't play very well. It was an absolute drubbing," admitted Collingwood, despite goals by Glenn Humphries and Nick Smith.

"The spirit is high but we need a break over Christmas. It's been the toughest time we've had for a few seasons." Rochdale have been plagued by injuries with skipper Neil Marshall - the England Under-19 international - and Nick Nugent still missing.

"We've had injury problems in a few positions, but we are not playing good team lacrosse at the moment - and we know we need to change that," added Collingwood.

Rochdale face Cheadle tomorrow, and Collingwood added: "I don't think we've ever beaten them. I think we'll need plenty of luck. We just need a rest to recharge our batteries."
