Independent galleries Tangled by Hilary Jack Recently Manchester has witnessed the growth of a self-confident community of artists. This has coincided with the opening of a rash of new private galleries. In 2003 the Comme Ca Art Prize North was launched for visual artists working and living in the North of England with prize money of £10,000 going to the winner. The shortlisted artists will be displayed at Comme Ca Art's Gallery Space at Timber Wharf in October.
1998 Turner winner: Manchester's Chris Ofili with Through the Grapevine
Five City based artists
Crowe and Rawlinson Prolific multi-media duo whose output draws equally from art historical and contemporary philosophical sources. Intellectually driven but always visually arresting, they are rapidly acquiring national recognition.
Hilary Jack Hilary Jack's work spans a variety of media. A recent body of work included her completed paintings made into "useful" objects and some useful objects made into "paintings". Her work was included in the Liverpool Biennial and can be seen at Manchester Art Gallery and in Arts Transpennine during 2003.
Liam Spencer Liam Spencer's urban landscapes extend a tradition of painting that transcribes recognisable subjects through loose allusive brushwork and closely harmonised colour. Extremely collectable.
David Gledhill Gledhill's figurative work features compelling, moody images of human affairs, rich in ambiguity and tension. His recent suburban landscapes score through a sense of absence that remains equally haunting.
Ben Cook Ben Cook has looked long and hard at what makes up a painting and the result has been a sequence of found and manipulated works that sparkle with wit and invention. Alyson Doocey of Comme Ca Art comments:
"After gaining a Fine Art degree I returned to Manchester to pursue my career. But ten years ago it wasn't happening at all in Manchester, you couldn't walk into any of the galleries and demand an exhibition, so I had to find an alternative space to put my degree show up. Finally a friend who was running Manto Bar on Canal Street agreed to show my work. When it came to taking it down they asked for more and I thought, hey, that's a job? Claire Turner and I started working together later. Claire's from an interior design background and as furniture and fine art go together the relationship seemed natural. Eventually we reached the level where we needed a gallery space which is why we've moved into Timber Wharf. Our artists have grown and so have we - many of the artists have stayed with us from the start. We fund the gallery, with sponsors, although we are looking for more, and of course we've started the Comme Ca Art prize this year - again our money. We are hoping for more recognition for the artists. I think the city has more of a cohesive artistic community today than it has ever had. As more of the artists' studios have developed and artists have found their feet, they've become more professional. It's not that the quality of the art has got better, but there is more exposure. The audience are beginning to catch up with the progress of the artists too." Private Galleries for Visual Arts include:
