Manchester, in the last years of the eighteenth century and the first years of the nineteenth century, provided for a world a model of the emerging industrial society. This city led the world for better or for worse, into the modern age.

A quiet beginning

It all started with the Romans. No record has been found of buildings related to the Setantii branch of the local Brigantes tribe so it must have been the cohorts of XXth Valeria Victrix legion, under General Agricola, who spotted Manchester's potential in 79 AD.

English Civil War

During the Civil War Manchester was one of very few towns in Lancashire to support Parliament against King Charles I. Indeed it bears the dubious distinction of claiming the first casualty of the whole war.

Notoriety - the Nineteenth Century

Where the actual touch-paper of industrialisation was lit has been the subject of much debate, but its first urban product was Manchester. The growth of the city, in terms of those times, was astonishing. By 1801 the population had climbed to 90,000 and by 1861 it was 355,000.

Why Manchester?

A repeated part truth is that is has a wet, humid climate ideal for spinning yarn. More importantly south-east Lancashire's steep streams provided power for the mills and gave soft water for the washing and bleaching of cotton.

Retrenchment - the Twentieth Century

The new century proved a false dawn. The previous century had been predominantly Britain’s century and the city had taken full advantage. Manchester in the eyes of the world meant cotton and in cotton its position seemed unassailable.
