1996 bomb

The IRA bomb placed thousands of lives at risk on a busy Saturday morning in the city centre.  But, in a remarkable operation, the emergency services, given 45 minutes warning, cleared the streets and nobody was murdered although several hundred were injured.  The damage amounted to £700m with 670 businesses having to relocate.  The response from community was superb and the atrocity was turned into an opportunity.  Shortly afterwards a Lord Mayor's fund raised money to help those affected and a decision was taken to rebuild the city centre better than before.
