Public holidays

In England, public holidays are known as Bank Holidays.  These are no longer observed by shops.  Most larger stores would like to open 365 days a year but they are legally obliged to close on Christmas Day and Easter Sunday.  Most shops are also restricted to trading for only six hours on a Sunday.  Public transport is also less frequent on Bank Holidays.

Bank Holidays:

May Day: Monday 5th May 2003
Summer Bank Holiday: Monday 25th August 2003
Christmas Day: 25th December
Boxing Day: 26th December
New Year's Day: 1st January
