Almost of major city size, this museum makes for a good excursion from Manchester. It's very handsome too, occupying part of a fine piece of civic planning from the first half of C20. There are touring exhibitions of paintings, photography, sculpture and contemporary ceramics. In the museum there is a very good aquarium, a Wildlife on your Doorstep exhibition, Ancient Eygptian Treasures and an exhibition on British Archaeology. Thomas Moran's celebrated painting Evening Camp, Nearing the Upper Colorado River, 1882, is always enjoyable.
