Everyday April to October, 9.30am - 5.30pm. A good distance, 20 or so miles, from the city centre but this radio telescope is included here because it is operated by the University of Manchester. The main saucer, finished in 1957, rears over the bucolic Cheshire countryside like a huge abstract sculpture. It was the first to track the Soviet satellite Sputnik. Inside there is the best planetarium in the area plus exhibitions on astronomy, satellites etc. Outside a 35 acre arboretum allows the visitor to contemplate the gifts of Mother Earth.
Toilets, baby changing, food and drink, shop, group and school visits, disabled access, Braille interpretation, audio interpretation for both adults and children, events. Links within ManchesterOnline
