One of the best days out around Manchester, this museum is housed in a 200 year-old spinning mill deep in a picturesque dell. The museum is fully working with skilled demonstrators operating original machinery and giving a display of the different processes needed to take cotton from raw material stage to finished product. This involves carding, spinning and weaving. It is a fascinating process to watch. In the museum shop you can buy some of the items made in the mill. The water-wheel, installed 1850, is said to be the largest working example in the country.
A short walk away is the Apprentice House where the pauper children were housed whilst they worked at the mill. The model village of Style is in itself worth a visit, totally unspoilt, it has handsome stone houses, a school, a shop and a church. There are also the very attractive 250 acres of Style Country Park, with its river and woodland walks. There is a licensed restaurant at the mill.
Toilets, baby changing, food and drink, shop, group and school visits, disabled access, guided tours, events.
