Based in the refurbished Tourist Information Centre, this hourly interactive, walkabout exhibition starts its journey 2,000 years ago when the Setantii branch of the Brigantes tribe inhabited Tameside and Greater Manchester.  The tour depicts the area and its inhabitants through time zones.  It ends in a tribute to modern-day Tameside and some of its more famous citizens, such as Margaret Beckett MP and Mick Hucknall of Simply Red.  Kids love the ghost stories told in the crypt as well as the more hands-on exhibits.  Members of the Manchester University Archaeology Department are on hand to demonstrate how and where to begin to trace ancestors.  You can also bring along any artefacts or pieces of pottery every Friday to be viewed by an archaeologist.

Toilets, shop, group and school visits, disabled access, audio interpretation, events.
